Demi Lovato's newest Single is bitter sweet for me. 'Sober' is a sparse piano ballad underpinned by light percussion. The lyrics detail her reckoning with the shame and having the courage to ask for forgiveness despite falling from grace. In light of recent news with her overdose on heroin, and her past addiction struggles, the song is very emotional.
Demi has always been fairly open about her own struggles with drugs and alcohol. In 2017, she has addressed her addiction and recovery extensively in her documentary.
The song is very heavy, but catchy. One of the most harrowing lines to me, is the following: “Momma, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore/ And Daddy please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor/ To the ones who never left me, we’ve been down this road before/ I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.”
